Custom Supplement Formulation: From Brief to Approved Sample
Custom formulation is a sequence of decisions. The sample is where the written brief meets the product people will actually use.

Define what must be custom
A custom formula begins with a reason to develop something specific. It may be the ingredient combination, target serving, flavour, texture or format. Write down the characteristics that are essential to the brand and those you are willing to adjust after technical review.
Include the intended consumer and sales markets. A formula cannot be evaluated apart from its use and the rules that apply where it will be sold. If you have a reference product, describe what you want to emulate and what you want to change rather than asking for an undefined copy.
Turn the brief into a feasible direction
The R&D discussion considers ingredients, target amounts, format and how the product will be made and used. A promising ingredient list may be too large for the desired capsule, difficult to flavour in a drink or unsuitable for the selected pack. Those issues should be raised while decisions are still open.
Ask what is proposed for each ingredient source and how the serving is calculated. Keep a record of the rationale for major choices. If one requirement cannot be met as written, decide whether the ingredient, amount, format or experience is the part that may change.
Use samples to make specific decisions
A sample round should answer defined questions. For a powder or drink, test sweetness, aroma, mouthfeel, preparation and aftertaste under realistic conditions. Compare versions side by side and give one consolidated response. For a capsule, focus on the serving and physical format rather than trying to judge an ingredient from appearance.
Label each sample version and state whether it is approved, needs revision or is rejected. Specify the changes you request. 'Less sweet at the full serving' can be evaluated; 'make it feel more premium' leaves too much open to interpretation.
Approve the specification before production
The approved sample needs to match a written formula and product specification. Confirm the pack, quantity, applicable testing and documentation, and the market for which the product is being developed. A flavour approval by itself is not approval of the complete finished product.
Vitaminlabs carries out custom formulation without a separate development fee. Custom projects do require a higher project-specific minimum order than a comparable private label starting point. Share the intended quantity early so we can discuss the feasible route alongside the formula.
